Songwriting SKETCHES

A space for sharing the early stages of my songwriting process.

THE CAROUSEL KEEPS YOU

Piano Composition: I once had an idea about a little boy who gets on a carousel and can’t get off until he’s eighty. I turned it into the poem “The Carousel Keeps You,” and then adapted that poem into lyrics—but it didn’t work for me, so I left them out.

Here’s a draft I wrote called “The Mirror” back in 2020. It’s another case where I prefer the music over the lyrics. I’ve revised the lyrics and melody a few times, but I’m still not sure what I plan to do with the song—if anything. It was deceptively tricky to learn to play and sing at the same time. The distorted harmonizing vocals aren’t saying anything in particular. I’m a huge fan of that using gibberish in songs.
